Meditation
Renee Steiner Hinkins
Meditation has been around for thousands of years as part of spiritual practices . It helps one master one’s mental process. These days, meditation is commonly thought of as a way to relax and manage stress. Anyone can practice meditation. Spending even just a few minutes in meditation can restore calm and inner peace and give one a new clearer perspective.
Recently, it has been well researched and the benefits have been well documented. The National Center for Complementary and alternative Medicine cites the following benefits:
Increased brain wave coherence which is associated with greater creativity, improved moral reasoning, and higher IQ.
Decreased anxiety and depression. Decreased irritability and moodiness
Improved learning ability and memory
Increased feelings of vitality
Increased happiness and emotional stability
“Meditation can give you a sense of calm, peace and balance that benefits both your emotional well-being and your overall health. And these benefits don't end when your meditation session ends. Meditation can help carry you more calmly through your day and improve certain medical conditions.”
The emotional benefits of meditation include:
•Gaining a new perspective on stressful situations
•A tool for stress management
•Increased self-awareness and self understanding
•Being presently focused and aware of bodily sensations
•Reducing negative emotions
Research suggests the health benefits that may occur with meditation practice. Meditation is a complimentary approach and should not be used as a substitute for medical care. It may help with :
•Allergies
•Anxiety disorders and depression
•Asthma
•Binge eating and bulimic behaviors
•Fatigue
•Heart disease
•High blood pressure
•Pain
•Sleep problems
•Substance abuse and other addictive behaviors.
If you have a medical problem, talk to your doctor.
I often use Guided meditations in session. Guided imagery or visualization is utilized to invoke calmness . With the use of as many senses as possible, such as smells, sights, sounds and textures, a calm or happy place is experienced and the stress in the body is released.
I also teach Mindfulness meditation. This type of meditation is based on staying in the present moment You focus on what you experience during meditation, such as the flow of your breath. You observe your thoughts and emotions but let them pass without judgment allowing yourself to separate yourself from your thoughts.
